The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and The Nature Conservancy sponsored a field day in McLean County to learn more about different conservation practices. Wedrose Acres was one of the sites selected for our Wetland Restoration and Forestry endeavors. The groups were able to view our native grasses, three wetland areas,. pond and Wedrose's forestry program.
Informational talks are given on site by staff of DNR and The Nature Conservancy. The many values of wetlands are only recently being understood and appreciated. Some of the benefits pointed out to the groups are wetland's ability to provide natural pollution control. They remove nutrients, pesticides and bacteria from surface waters. Wetlands collect and filter sediment from surface runoffwater. Due to the fact that wetlands store runoff water, both soil erosion and flooding downstream are reduced. They also provide wildlife habitat and add beauty and value to areas. The forestry program protects eroding and collapsing stream banks as well as excellent wildlife habitat. Our prairie grasses provide additional habitat for a variety of grassland birds and other animals. Ponds also help prevent soil erosion and protect water quality by collecting and storing runoff water and also provide water for fish and wildlife.
Here at WedRose Arces, we continue to provide tours sharing information and ideas regarding the care and protection of animals, native flora and fauna. This spring we had eight group visits, which included area students, local residents, Chicago and Springfield friends.
